Volunteer Coordinator

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Coordinator of Volunteers facilitates the effective use of volunteer resources at all preserves to meet the needs of all departments within the Champaign County Forest Preserve District. The duties of this position include recruiting, training, supervising, and recognizing District volunteers. Duties also include Developing and maintaining direct contact with various public groups in an effort to stimulate volunteerism and support. This may entail representation of the District at various meetings. The position is part-time. Hours will include evening and weekend work.  

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, park and recreation, public or business administration or a related field preferred. Under unusual circumstances, extensive direct experience may be substituted for all or part of the educational requirement. Two years experience in a like position with similar duties and responsibilities are required. Excellent oral and written communication skills essential. Previous work experience in volunteer management is desirable. Candidate must demonstrate good safety awareness and judgement. A valid Illinois driver's license is required.

Campground Naturalist

MAIN DUTIES

  • Develop and conduct naturalist programs at the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve campground
  • Develop educational materials and curriculum
  • Must be available to work weekends and evenings

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience working with the public, including children
  • Knowledge of area flora and fauna
  • Experience in Environmental or Outdoor Education desirable
  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Education or related field a plus but not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all conditions and with minimal supervision

This is a part-time seasonal position (approx. 26 hours/week) available from mid May through early September. The primary work location is Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. Pay rate is $8.75—9.75 per hour depending on experience.

  • Teach Eco-Adventures summer day camps
  • Conduct other educational programs for youth and adults
  • Develop educational materials
  • Assist with care of the Interpretive Center’s resident animals
  • Assist with daily operation of the Center
  • Assist with special programs and events
  • Must be available to work occasional Saturdays and evenings.
