Construction Begins on a New Bike Path in Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve

Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve will soon have a new pathway for visitors to explore. Construction is beginning on the Lake of the Woods Road multi-purpose pathway in Mahomet. The bicycle/pedestrian path will be built in partnership with the Village of Mahomet and the Illinois Department of Transportation. IDOT grant funding, in the amount of $1.2 million, will cover about 80% of the construction costs for the project.

The path section at Lake of the Woods is a small part of a bigger project for The Village of Mahomet. The path will provide safe and efficient non-vehicular access throughout parts of Mahomet. It will begin at Mahomet’s Barber Park, follow the Sangamon River under the US 150 river bridge, and connect to the existing pathway along the north side of US 150. The path will then continue on the west side of the Lake of the Woods Road from US 150 across I-74 to the Elks Lake service entrance of the Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve.  The path will continue through the forest preserve to the main entrance on Lake of the Woods Rd.

Construction of the path section within Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve is just underway and should be completed by mid-October. The section of the pathway that will cross I-74 on Lake of the Woods Road will be undertaken by IDOT and is expected to begin in late 2013.

The map below out lines the location of the multi-purpose path (red and yellow lines), and shows the road closure (yellow line)at points throughout the process.
