Homer Lake Forest Preserve
Wildlife and natural beauty abound in the 800 acres at Homer Lake Forest Preserve near Homer, Illinois. From sledding when the snow falls to fishing and boating in the summer months, Homer Lake is a beautiful setting for visitors to get away for some relaxation. Trails abound for hiking, nature study and bird-watching, and picnicking areas are plentiful.
The county highway bordering the north end of the preserve was the horse trail Abraham Lincoln traveled when he served on the judicial circuit. The preserve includes the 28-acre site once known as Homer Park, a popular "destination park" in the early 1900s.

The Salt Fork Center, used frequently for gatherings, overlooks beautiful Homer Lake. This building, constructed with grant funds administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, is one of our most sought-after facilities. Nearby is a boat dock, outdoor amphitheater and system of interpretive trails.
The Environmental Education Center is located here also, immediately inside the entrance. Staff has worked to make this facility one of the most comprehensive resource centers in the region. Many taxidermy pieces are also on display. At the rear of the center is a viewing area for our bird feeding station, complete with microphone and shaded glass. There are numerous other hands-on activities. Visitors of all ages will find plenty to do.
