Geocaching & LetterboxingGeocaching and Letterboxing are adventurous outdoor activities for all age groups. If you like hunting for treasure, have good orienteering skills, and love the great outdoors, these activities are for you and your family. Best of all, you can play right here in East Central Illinois on Champaign County Forest Preserve District land and elsewhere. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure-hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups. There are more than 700,000 geocaches in the world, and over a dozen caches on Champaign County Forest Preserve District-owned lands. Letterboxing is an intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a charming "treasure hunt" style outdoor quest. A wide variety of adventures can be found to suit all ages and experience levels. There are several letterboxes placed on District-owned lands. Before placing a geocache or letterbox on CCFPD-owned land, there are some rules you should know. For additional information on Geocaching visit www.geocaching.com.
