Museum of the Grand Prairie

The Museum of the Grand Prairie will continue to uphold all necessary public health guidelines and restrictions to keep our patrons and staff safe. 

    • Museum is currently closed until March 2022
    • Masks or other face coverings must be worn by museum patrons at all times.
    • Guests must maintain a safe distance of 6 feet between staff and other museum patrons not affiliated with their party.
    • Guests should use hand sanitizer immediately upon entering the building. Handwashing and hand sanitizer stations will be made available throughout the facility. Guests are encouraged to wash or sanitize hands often.
    • If you are showing signs of COVID-19 symptoms, please stay home.
    • Museum visitation is reserved for the general public. Group visits are not being scheduled at this time.
    • The first hour of every Wednesday will be reserved for persons over 65 and other vulnerable groups.
    • Bathrooms and popular public areas will be cleaned on a regular basis.

 All guests who do not comply with the above rules and guidelines will not be allowed entry into the museum or may be asked to leave.

The Museum of the Grand Prairie and Champaign County Forest Preserve District strives to keep its users safe while offering great educational opportunities. It is likely that we will increase hours in the coming months if the COVID-19 virus statistics improve. Meanwhile, the Museum and Education Department will continue to offer excellent programming on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. Find us there!

The Museum of the Grand Prairie at Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve in Mahomet offers dynamic exhibits, programs and events rich in local history. During your visit, head outside to enjoy the Discovery Garden, the Mabery Gelvin Botanical Garden and hiking trails in natural areas.


Our regular hours are reduced due to COVID-19. Please note statement above regarding the museum's current hours.

The Museum of the Grand Prairie is open 1-5 p.m. daily March-December
Admission is free.
